Hmong Tribal Purses

The Hmong are an ancient tribe of mountain people who migrated from China in the mid-nineteenth century. Seeking social, economic and political freedom has become the defining element of Hmong tribes; the word Hmong means “free”. These purses, with their fine embroidered needlework, are a reflection of their cultural struggles and are of great pride to Hmong women. Brightly colored fabrics create traditional clothing for celebrations including their New Year, marriages, births and other important events. Cross stitch, needle weaving and other techniques are used to create these wearable works of art involving both ancient traditions and more recent adaptations made during long years of survival in refugee camps. Many of the Hmong have relocated to the mountain regions of Laos, Thailand and Vietnam from where we have sourced these traditional items just for you…Ben
